The Azores archipelago consists of nine volcanic islands. They’re found in the middle of the Atlantic, about 1,500 kilometres West of Lisbon and 3,600 kilometres East of New York. The archipelago is divided into three geographic groups, clearly seen in this image. The eastern group is composed of São Miguel and Santa Maria, the central group is Terceira, Pico, Graciosa, São Jorge and Faial, and finally the western group includes Flores and Corvo. The most recent land formation of the archipelago was the Ponta dos Capelinhos on Faial. The Capelinhos volcano erupted between 1957 and 1958 creating a new part of land on the island. The old lighthouse was left covered by the ash of the volcano. This image provides you with an idea of the weather that will be felt in the Azores during your visit. You may observe how the climate is shaping up so you make sure you are taking all the swimsuits or coats you need during your holiday.
