Coimbra Weather & Climate |
Coimbra, situated in central Portugal, enjoys a climate cooler than Lisbon and, at times, warmer than Porto. Temperatures here are mild with warm summers generally not reaching above 30ºC and cooler winters, where temperatures tend to be between 14ºC and 5ºC. Portuguese weather pleases everyone as every season is balanced and very different from one another, providing a climate to suit all tastes. With the cooler months comes the rain. Coimbra’s green landscape and nearby mountain ranges are nurtured by these waters that fall mainly from November until February. Rainfall decreases dramatically during the rest of the year, the driest months being the warmest also. Spring is a wonderful time to visit Coimbra. The nights are warmer than during the Winter and the days are not yet as hot as during the Summer months. The landscape sees its first flushes of colours as nature brings out its flowers. The city gains a different life, with more people out on the street to make the most of the sunshine hours and the warmer weather. During the hot summer months, Coimbra’s proximity (48 km) to the long beautiful sandy beaches of Figueira da Foz, allows you to cool off with a pleasant swim in the sea. Drive down to the coast where you can spend an afternoon by the beach in the company of the profound blue Atlantic Ocean that bathes its beaches with its spectacular waves. Take a walk, relax or practice some sport in the city’s green parks, gardens and avenues. Autumn is less busy. The tree leaves start to dry up and gain a copper red colour, falling from the branches and creating a crispy bed on the ground. The nights are less hot, although it is still possible to dine or take evening drinks al-fresco. The sun is slightly cooler during the day, an ideal temperature allowing for all kinds of events and activities. If you prefer cooler days when you can warm up next to a fireplace in a local restaurant or at your fantastic hotel, it is best to visit Coimbra from November to April. If you are looking for warm sunny days where you can rest outside in a cafes’ terrace, take a walk under the shade and spend a day on the beach; come to Coimbra in the warmer months of May to October. Coimbra is prepared for all kinds of weather.
