San Sebastian Climate |
San Sebastián boasts a comfortable maritime climate, characterised by warm summers, mild winters and generous rainfall throughout the year. Summer has an average temperature of 18ºC, with maximums rarely going higher than 30ºC. Temperatures can drop in the evenings, so pack a light jacket if you are headed for a walk along the beach or promenade. Rainfall is lower than the rest of the year but showers are still common. Ten glorious hours of sunshine per day can be enjoyed during the summer months. The mild (and often wild) waters in the bay average around 19-22ºC - ideal for water sports including surfing, windsurfing, body boarding and scuba diving. During the winter months, temperatures average round 9ºC and rarely fall below 5ºC. This is the wettest, windiest season although the water temperatures are still fairly mild, averaging around 9-13ºC. The best way to warm up in winter is stopping for a meal at a traditional sidrería (cider house), enjoying the scent of newly opened apple cider kegs. Expect mild daytime temperatures and an average of 8.5 hours of sunshine per day if you choose to visit during spring and autumn, although both seasons experience some unpredictable weather conditions. For those hoping for a dip in the bay, early autumn is preferable to late spring in terms of water temperature.
