Sunny days in Amsterdam are glorious, but rain is possible at any time of year and there are often days on end when there is not a breath of wind, and the city sits under an oppressing, low grey sky. Daytime summer temperatures rarely top 22º C or 23º C, and can drop to the low teens.
Snow is fairly common in winter (from late December onwards), though rarely stays around for more than a few days. The canals freeze over enough to support skaters only once every few years, though night-time temperatures a generally below freezing from mid December through to March. There are sometimes weeks at a stretch when the temperature does not get back above zero during the day as well.
