Porto Santo Beaches |
Porto Santo’s calling card is undisputedly its beach. As if a 9km expanse of unspoilt shimmering, white sand bathed by warm, limpid, turquoise water were not enough, this small island can also boast of mild weather all year round and a tranquillity that is seldom to be found in other European seaside destinations. The temperature of the water and the soft, silky texture of the sand are not all. Both are said to have healing properties and are rich in iodine, calcium and magnesium, making them very beneficial for the treatment of rheumatism and bone ailments. If the sunbathing and swimming don’t suffice, complementary treatments are available from the island’s thalassotherapy spa, situated in the Vila Baleira Paradise Resort and open to the general public. Although the beach is one long, undivided expanse, sections of it are attributed different names. The south-eastern Praia do Penedo is possibly the most isolated, the Praia da Fontinha is a favourite with sunbathers and Praia do Cabeço, situated in the hotel zone, is popular with tourists. Praia das Pedras Pretas is a lovely retreat and the last on the golden stretch is Praia da Calheta, set amidst rocks and offering fabulous views of the Ilhéu de Baixo islet opposite and of the island of Madeira in the horizon. Porto Santo’s warm waters attract a host of water sports, foremost amongst which is diving. With such clear waters and visibility averaging approximately 30 m, it is a divers’ haven, the most attractive diving area undoubtedly being the site of the sunken ship “Madeirense”, south of the Porto do Abrigo. A variety of boat trips provide the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the dolphins and whales that inhabit these waters or to pay a visit to the islets surrounding Porto Santo while the more adventurous may take up the challenge of deep sea fishing. Alternatively, for those who prefer to remain closer to the island’s shores, various other water sports are easily available, including canoeing, kayaking, sailing, jet-skiing, water-skiing, windsurfing and kite surfing.
