Things to do in Menorca |
Where to start? Minorca has hundreds of activities and experiences to offer! Get to know the beauty of Minorca by land. The Camí de Cavalls is an ancient country path around the island that was created to allow a quick way for the military to spread news of an invasion during this island’s turbulent past. Hike, bike or horse ride around this path and see the stunning beauty of this land for yourself. If you want to explore Minorca by sea, take one of the many boat excursions that leave from the port of Mahón or Es Castell. Its unspoilt coves with beautiful beaches and dramatic cliffs are simply gorgeous. Also get down to the 3 km beach of Son Bou, the longest on the island, or the Cala Galdana in a beautiful bay, increasingly more popular with tourists. Other beaches of note are: Punta Prima, Cales Coves, Cala Mitjana, Cala Turqueta and Son Xoriguer. Minorca’s gastronomy is also extraordinary. The main local dish is the caldereta de llagosta or lobster stew. This delicacy is best made in Fornells and is a favourite dish of King Juan Carlos of Spain who visits every summer in order to sample this spiny lobster treat. For a full gastronomic experience, try the famous Mahón cheese. Then visit the Xoriguer distillery, near the port of Mahón, where this island’s rare gin is made. Some exciting markets can be found in Alaior, the capital of the dairy industry, as well as great cheeses and a delicious locally made ice-cream. Don’t miss out on the shopping opportunities in Ferreries, internationally known for its crafted sandals, the avarques; you will also find plenty of other leather goods here. And last but not least, grab a drink or something to eat at the Cova d’en Xoroi in Cala’n Porter on the southern coast of the island, a large cliff-side cave containing tunnels and archways and providing fantastic sea views. Surely a great way to end your day in Minorca. |
