If you’re looking for chic boutiques and designer labels then Avenida da Liberdade is probably the best place to start. Here the likes of Ermenegildo Zegna, Escada, Luis Vuitton, Emporio Armani, Trussardi, Burberry and Longchamp line the wide tree-lined avenue. The avenue was completed in 1882 and modelled on the Champs-Elysées in Paris. Some of the original buildings have been replaced by modern glass and steel fronted office and hotel blocks, but some old architectural gems remain, including a number of art deco kiosks that serve as restaurants in the central area of the broad avenue. Its pedestrian sidewalks and roundabouts are decorated with many monuments and statues. Originally the carriageway was bordered with wide blue mosaic pavements, palm trees, many fountains, and ornamental ponds stocked with goldfish and swans.
