It is always an occasion when one visits the theatre and it is no different In Lisbon. The beautiful theatres here, such as the 18th century São Carlos and the Dona Maria II, make it even more special. There is a wide choice of excellent performances, some of Portuguese pieces but also of works by renowned international authors. Be warned that most performances are in Portuguese, but especially with well known pieces this may in fact turn out to be a very interesting experience, allowing you to concentrate on the many other aspects, in addition to the text, that make up performances.
Teatro Nacional de São Carlos Magnificent 18th century opera house hosting regular international and local productions, the building is one of the prettiest in Europe and is modelled on La Scala in Milan and San Carlos in Naples.

Most theatre performance in Lisbon are in Portuguese, but there are, however, also some English-language productions. Try the Artistas Unidos (Rua Campo de Ourique 120. Tel: 21 370 0120), which is a company that specialises in alternative theatre.
Coliseu dos Recreios Opened on the 14th of August 1890, this stage for performances was innovative as it introduced iron architecture, incipient in Portugal at the time.
