This large downtown square between Avenida da Liberdade and Rossio Square contains an obelisk built to commemorate the country’s liberation in 1640, after 60 years, from Spanish rule, and around this is a black and white mosaic calçada pavement. On the west side of the square one finds the newly restored 18th century Foz Palace, which is also the national tourism office and on the east side, within the old nineteen fifties Condes Cinema, is Lisbon’s Hard Rock Cafe, which attracts hundreds of homesick tourists. You will also notice a fabulous art deco building known as the Eden Cinema and designed by architect Cassiano Branco. There are a number of cafes around the square and if you head towards Rossio you’ll pass the beautiful Neo-Manueline Rossio train station.
